Scott Macartney
was born and raised in Washington State
and started skiing at Crystal Mountain.
His mother and father (both ski patrollers
at Crystal Mountain) taught him how to
ski at an early age. Scott skied in his
first race - the Cherry Tree Charge Downhill
- at age 7 and has been hooked every since.
He grew up chasing his older brother Matt
and some friends around the mountain. He
began competing and training with the Crystal
Mountain Alpine Club
and
worked his way up the ranks starting out
at the local races in Washington, the Pacific
Northwest, the Western Region and then
finally when the time was right, the entire
U.S.
He was the Western J3 slalom gold medalist in '93, J2 SL champ in '94, silver
medalist in slalom at the '95 J1-2 Western Junior Olympics, J1 SL champ in '96,
and national junior super G champ in '97. By '99, he had a passion for downhill,
winning the bronze medal at Junior Worlds, which earned him a spot on the National
team. He then worked his way through the C-Team (the Nor-ams), the B-Team (Europa
Cup and some World Cups) to become a steady point scorer on the World Cup speed
circuit. He is currently in the first group (the top 30 in the world) in Downhill.
Like many alpine racers, Scott has had to overcome several injuries and learned
countless medical terms and about procedures first hand. They have ranged from
the relatively normal ACL/ MCL/ meniscus combo to a fractured tibia plateau/torn
gastric and most recently a nice little hip surgery. Injuries remain an unfortunate
part of this game. This past season he had a career ending crash in Kitzbuhel
when he lost control near the end of the run and flew over 180 feet and landed
on his head. He was life-flighted out and many feared for his life. Miraculously
he has made a full recovery and is skiing better than ever.
He has high hopes for the upcoming season and is not going to let anything get
in the way of reaching his goal of making his 3rd Olympic Team in Vancouver 2010!

is a young non-profit that is expanding rapidly
but has deep roots in the sport.
